ASAP Activities

ASAP Student Open House
"Play hard, before you work hard": The ASAP student staff team will be hosting a game day during week 1 before tutoring begins. This is a casual way for students to get to know our tutor team. Our open house will be held Wednesday January 15th from 12pm - 4pm. Please print our flyer and encourage students to stop by and get to know us.

Tutoring
Tutoring each semester starts in week 2! The schedule will become available on our website by Thursday 1/16 and students can see that schedule here. Students struggling with courses not listed or have trouble attendng our open group tutoring hours, may submit a private request right on that same page. Allison Anderson, our graduate assistant for student learning, may be contacted at aander76@uic.edu with any tutor concerns.

Workshops
Skill building coaching such as Time Management or Learning Styles workshops are available several times a week the first 4 weeks of spring. Students can simply check the schedule and show up to ASAP at a time or submit a private request. We encourage you to post our flyer on your blackboard sights and or print and post in the area. Our Time Management Workshop is also available online and you may find information on all workshops offered on the AHS student resources support webpage.

Other activities
In partnership with Alumni Engagement, we offer Career Conversations, where students are match with participating alumni to allow them the opportunity to informational interview with a professional. Adeolu Ademiluyi, graduate assistant for student engagement can be contacted at aademi3@uic.edu with any questions regarding this program.
This year's AHS Alumni Chat will take place February 25 in which 35 students will have dinner with alumni from different programs to gain perspective on their journey. Students will need to RSVP to attend, and that RSVP list will be on the Inside-AHS news the first week of February.
ASAP will be offering a 3-week development series for students to develop their natural talents using CliftonStrengths Assesement starting the first week in April. We hope to target this program to student leaders in AHS affiliated student organizations although undergraduates who might want to learn more about themselves and develop their strengths should absoultely participate and are welcome to join the series.

Your Partnership
5 ways you can help with student engagement:
1. Make any one of the above ASAP activities extra credit assignments. Throw them a point or 2 to any of the activities above you feel would be valuable for our students (hopefully all of them). An ASAP activity stamp is available for proof of attendance.
2. Invite ASAP to come in and speak to your class. We can do 2-5 minute presentations or occupy a full class on a number of topics.
3. Sign up to recieve weekly AHS Connections student news and forward opportunities you learn to students as they happen.
4. If you know an alumni who graduated in the last 3-5 years, email them to encourage their participation in "Career Conversations" and be added to our Alumni Bank - You may also pass the name along to Kristen Kepnick (kkepnick@uic.edu). Assoc. Director of Alumni Engagement and Participation.
5. We have 30 student staff including two graduate students who may reach out to you about your course(s) or involvement, please help them help students. If you aren't being reached out to, but want to be more involved and are not sure how, email me (vkt@uic.edu) and I'd love to talk more.

ASAP syllabus language
As the new academic semester begins, I include optional suggested language to promote our services to students in your course syllabi should you be interested in including it.

The Academic Support and Achievement Program (ASAP) is a center provided by the College of Applied Health Sciences. Located in room 356 of PEB, ASAP offers tutoring, academic workshops, books, printing, and more. ASAP tutors are upperclass students who have successfully completed the courses they tutor. All students are highly encouraged to attend and “brain build.”

ASAP is open Monday –Thursday 8:30am – 5pm and Fridays 8:30am – 3pm. For more information, visit us in person in 356 PEB or online at go.uic.edu/asap.

ASAP power point slides
Our team developed ASAP power point slides filled with fun facts and motivational quotes for you to incoporate in lectures. Pick some your favorites and incorporate them onto your slides or as you please. Perhaps have a slide up just before class begins for your early arrivers, or consider sending them with some motivation. Our goal is to spread the word to students beyond our current reach, dispell myths on tutoring and entice them to visit.
