Call for research study subjects: Help us learn more about exercise safety in children and young adults

The University of Illinois at Chicago is conducting a clinical research study looking at how exercise affects inflammation in the body, and how much exercise is safe. Specifically, we are looking for individuals without Sickle Cell Disease to serve as our control group. The findings of this study will help our understanding of how exercise is tolerated in individuals with Sickle Cell Disease.

If your child is eligible for the study, he or she will participate in 2 bicycle exercise tests, and have blood tests and breathing tests performed here at the University of Illinois at Chicago at the Integrative Physiology Laboratory.

Your child may be eligible if he or she:

  • Is healthy and does not have a chronic medical condition, including asthma
  • Is African or African American
  • Is between the ages of 10 and 21 years old
  • Does not have sickle cell disease or sickle cell trait

You or your child will be reimbursed for participating in this study.

This study is in conjunction with Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago (Lurie Children’s IRB # 2017-881), called “The Pro-Inflammatory Effects of Acute Exercise in Children with Sickle Cell Anemia” by PI Dr. Robert Liem.
