Proposed changes to the AHS Bylaws of the Faculty

Dear colleagues:

In collaboration with the AHS Executive Committee, we’d like to draw your attention to a few points to share with respect to the AHS Bylaws of the Faculty.

The bylaws currently state:

  1. Senators

The faculty shall elect annually one-third (33%) of its assigned delegation to the University of

Illinois at Chicago Senate to represent the College on matters of educational policy.

  1. The term of office of elected Senators shall be as specified in the “Bylaws of the

Senate—UIC”

  1. Election procedures shall be supervised by the Office of the Dean and the Executive Committee

at the annual spring meeting of the College as stipulated under Article III, Section 2(A).

Please be aware that our senators have already been voted in and are currently in place for this year. However, going forward, we will vote in new senators at every spring college meeting if and when a given member’s term of service expires.

Additionally, based on a motion that was made and seconded by the executive committee, a vote will be requested at this spring college meeting regarding what types of faculty appointments are eligible for voting on college committees and on bylaws changes. Specifically, research assistant, research associate and research professors are not permitted to vote under the AHS bylaws. The proposal on the table is to open voting privileges to these faculty.

Currently, the bylaws state:

SECTION 1.  MEMBERSHIP

  1. Faculty

The Faculty shall consist of all persons holding academic rank in the College of Applied Health

Sciences or in a department or program that offers a degree in the College of Applied Health

Sciences

  1. Voting Faculty

The identification of faculty eligible for College-wide voting is in accordance with Article II,

Section 3(a) of the Statutes. AHS voting faculty in College-wide decisions consist of the Dean and

all those in the College holding one of the following academic ranks as their primary salaried

appointment of at least 51% in AHS: Professor (Assistant, Associate or Full), or Clinical Professor

(Assistant, Associate or Full).”

The proposed changes are highlighted in yellow:

  1. Voting Faculty

The identification of faculty eligible for College-wide voting is in accordance with Article II, Section 3(a) of the Statutes. AHS voting faculty in College-wide decisions consist of the Dean and all those in the College holding one of the following academic ranks as their primary salaried appointment of at least 51% in AHS: Professor (Assistant, Associate or Full), or Research or Clinical Professor (Assistant, Associate or Full).

Membership

The Committee will include two tenured Associate or Full Professors from each of the Administrative Departments with at least a 75% appointment to the College. Selection of tenured faculty will be made in accordance with each department’s bylaws. In addition, the Executive Committee will select two clinical or research professors, associate or full, to serve on the committee. Clinical or research faculty will serve two-year terms on the committee.

An electronic ballot will be distributed to all AHS faculty via email during the college meeting. If you are eligible to vote (as per the current bylaws language), please make it a point to vote on this matter.

Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming college meeting!
