Public presentation and open lunch schedule for KN department head candidates

I am pleased to invite you to the following events associated with the search for the head of the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition. Upon showing up and signing in at a particular event, you will be registered to receive a confidential Qualtrics feedback form so that you may share your perspectives with Dean Crespo. Please make every effort possible to attend one or more of these events. Candidate 1: Steven Howell
Steve Howell, Ph.D. is a professor and department chair in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education at Northern Illinois University. His research focuses on investigating: outreach initiatives utilizing sport for social change and development; the alcohol-related behaviors of and issues surrounding college-aged students and individuals within the context of sport-specific events, activities, and services; and workplace practices and decision-making in professional sports, college athletics, and higher education. Within these areas, Howell and his colleagues have submitted over $4.9 million in federal funding and external contracts, co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles / book chapters, and given over 90 academic research presentations. Additionally, these funding and outreach efforts have afforded international sport-based partnerships and exchange programs in Australia, Belize, Colombia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. Howell earned degrees in Biology (B.S.) with a minor in Spanish, Chemistry (M.S.), and Health & Kinesiology (Ph.D.), all from Purdue University.

Candidate 2: David X. Marquez
David X. Marquez, PhD, earned a doctoral degree and a master's degree in kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Loyola University Chicago. He is a Professor and Interim Department Head of Kinesiology and Nutrition and Director of the Exercise Psychology Laboratory at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). He is also Leader of the Latino Core of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center. His research focuses on reducing health disparities, and primarily focuses on older Latino adults and individuals at risk for Alzheimer's disease. He served as one of 17 experts on the 2018 Federal Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee; and was a member of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition (PCSFN) to inform the development of the Physical Activity Guidelines Midcourse Report on older adults. He has been involved with many federally-funded, interdisciplinary, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the cognitive, functional, and psychosocial changes as a result of physical activity interventions. The BAILAMOS dance program he co-created is at the heart of his work. Dr. Marquez is a fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine, the Gerontological Society of America, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the National Academy of Kinesiology.

Candidate 3: Ted Angelopoulos
Dr. Angelopoulos is a professor in the Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Science at the University of Vermont. Dr. Angelopoulos recently completed a 5-year full-term role as Chair in the Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Sciences. His major research areas include adiposity, exercise, metabolism and physiogenomics. Specifically, Dr. Angelopoulos' research is focusing on: 1) the development of lifestyle interventions for the prevention and treatment of metabolic disease, 2) the role of regularly repeated exercise in modifying risk factors for cardio-metabolic disease and 3) the impact of dietary sugars in the development of adiposity and cardio-metabolic disease, 4) To identify genetic factors that dictated the response of health-related fitness phenotypes to exercise training. Dr. Angelopoulos received his B.S degree from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1982. He attended the University of Pittsburgh from 1983-1991 for post graduate studies. He received his M.S in Exercise Physiology in 1986, his M.P.H. in Epidemiology in 1990 and his Ph.D in Exercise Physiology in 1991. From 1991-1994 Dr. Angelopoulos was a post-doctoral fellow at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis Missouri. Dr. Angelopoulos served as Research Director for the Center for Lifestyle Medicine at the University of Central Florida from 2005-2010 and Director of Clinical Research at Florida Hospital Celebration Health (Orlando, FL) from 2002-2008.  Dr. Angelopoulos serves as Associate Editor for the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine and regularly reviews manuscripts for numerous journals including American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Obesity, Journal of Applied Physiology, Metabolism, International Journal of Sports Medicine, and Diabetes. Dr. Angelopoulos is the co-editor of the book Obesity: Prevention and Treatment (CRC Press).
